Slope (gradient) practice

Slope measures how steep a line is: the change in y divided by the change in x. It's central to graphs, rates and calculus.

Number Quest's slope questions practise the formula with clear explanations.

What the questions practise

  • Slope from two points
  • Reading slope and y-intercept from y = mx + c
  • Positive and negative slopes

  1. 1. SlopeSlope from (-2, 3) to (2, 0)?-1.3330.25-0.750.75

    Answer: -0.75. (0 − 3) / (2 − -2) = -0.75.

  2. 2. SlopeWhere does y = x cross the y-axis?(1, 0)(0, 1)(0, -1)(0, 0)

    Answer: (0, 0). When x = 0, y = 0.

  3. 3. SlopeWhat is the slope of y = 4x + 2?425-4

Answer: 4. The number in front of x is 4.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Subtract in the same order top and bottom.
  • Sketch the points.
  • Check the sign makes sense.
